Dr. Lanny Latham Goes Back to School

Wednesday, April 25th, 2007

Last night, on the way to one of my comedy shows, I stopped by my high school alumni reunion. Because I had to go straight from the alumni event to the comedy show, I had to carry around with me my ”bag full of props.” My “bag full of props” refers to all of the various props needed for my character, Dr. Lanny Latham. This includes a toy guitar, a toy keyboard, a jump rope, a puppet made out of a paper bag, a noise maker, a fake mustache, a fake headset, and several other little magic trinkets. So as all of the alumni and faculty stood around dressed in suits discussing the various hedge funds they worked for, I stood sheepishly to the side clutching my messenger bag and hoping the toy guitar wasn’t too noticeable to every one.

It occured to me at that time that I haven’t exactly changed very much since high school. Or kindergarten for that matter. For I still haven’t “graduated” from carrying around toy props. Some day…Some day…

But all of you should view this as a blessing in disguise. And what disguise might that be you may ask? Why it’s as Dr. Lanny Latham. For this Thursday, you have another chance to see Dr. Lanny Latham in action.

No Wigs!

Wednesday, April 18th, 2007

For some reason I find myself several times a week wearing fake wigs. I never intended this. When I was younger I never thought, “When I’m older I want to wear dirty, filthy wigs in dingy theatres all over lower Manhattan!” And yet I still manage to wear them quite often. It’s like I’m cursed or something. Where did I go wrong? Why can’t I just be a normal comedian?

There’s hope, for I’d like to let you know about two performances in which I wear no wigs. The first is for my weekly comedy show called Get Psyched! This week I will return back to my roots as Dr. Lanny Latham (sans wig), and will co-host the the show with fellow co-host, Adira Amram. The show is Thursday night, April 19, at 8pm at Rififi in the East Village. And we’ve got some stellar comedians booked for it including: Kristen Schaal, Sean O’Connor, Matt McCarthy, & Pat O’Shea.

The second performance, in which I wear no fake wigs, is from the hit Channel 102 show entitled The Fun Squad. Will Hines has recently added it to YouTube and it’s already getting thousands of views. Check it out for yourself, and notice the fact that I’m not wearing any wigs. It all part of my no wig policy from this point forward. (However, I still can’t promise a no fake-mustache policy. That would probably take years to pass.)

I will be playing Nick Nolte tonight at the Get Psyched! show. (Dr. Lanny Latham couldn’t make it.)

As always, Adira Amram will be co-hosting the event and playing some of her awesome songs. So come on down and check it out.

Human Giant Tonight on MTV at 10:30

Thursday, April 5th, 2007

Watch Human Giant tonight on MTV at 10:30 pm. I’m in it. Briefly. It’s at the beginning in the segment titled “Shutterbugs”. I’ll be the guy with the ridiculous looking sunglasses. But don’t watch just because of me. Watch because the show is chocked full of hilarious sketches, and also stars the awesome trio of Aziz Ansari, Rob Huebel and Paul Scheer. You can also download the episode for free on iTunes. Just click here.

Contrary to some speculation, Human Giant is not actually about human giants. This actually confused a TV Critic for the University of Rhode Island newspaper:

“My biggest complaint of them all, however, is why call the show Human Giant? The whole time I was watching the show, I kept asking myself, “What does this have to do with a human giant?” It boggled my mind and still to this moment and I am confused. Any ideas?” (If you do have an answer email Marla Horenbein TV Crtice for the Good 5 Cent Cigar Univ of Rhode Island’s Student Paper.)

Perhaps the next episode will focus on former NBA Center George Muresan and his new career as a fishing guide.

Ride the Dragon/Slay the Unicorn

Wednesday, April 4th, 2007

If either of the above activities interest you, then you should go see Get Psyched! this Thursday night (April 5th) at 8 pm. In order to give you a little taste of what you might see, here’s a video clip (recorded by Birch Harms) of our opening number from last week’s show. It’s the ”Get Psyched!” opening theme song, written and performed by my co-host, Adira Amram; awkward dancing provided by yours truly. Check it out:

And this week, we’re gonna attempt to take that opening number to a whole new level. Don’t believe me? Watch.
